alb5150808 Portrait of an Roman woman, marble, chiseled, drilled, smoothed, marble, Total: Height: 38.8 cm; Width: 21 cm; Depth: 22 cm, sculptures, woman, hairstyle fashion, hair fashion, late Imperial period, Severan, Roman antiquity, Remarkable in this portrait is the 'helmet hairstyle', so called because of the stiff mass of the neck hair, which reminds of the neck protection of a helmet. This type of hairstyle was introduced shortly after 200 AD by the Empresses Iulia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus, and Plautilla, wife of Caracalla, and was the most popular hairstyle of the following three decades. Embedded in the hair of the neck is a carefully plaited 'plait snail', whose unusually plastic elaboration is particularly striking in comparison with the topknots of the female portraits of the later 2nd century. One may be reminded of Tertullian's criticism: impossible monsters of braided or wavy hair are put on, sometimes like a fur cap, as it were as a sheath for the head, sometimes as a bulge on the back of the neck in the form of buns and shield humps. However, this applies more to the elaborately undulating hairstyles that were more common at that time, because in stark contrast to the 'braided nest', which may have been formed from a false hairpiece, the hairstyle of this Roman woman with her straight combed hair is otherwise quite simple. She thus fits the generally rather simple character of the portrait, a naturalistic depiction of a middle-aged woman. It can be seen that a double chin is hinted at and the face is modelled flat, fleshy and soft. The renunciation of linear hardness - characteristic of the Severan period - is particularly suited to emphasize the matronly features of the sitter.
